Leaves

Leaves

Leaves get all the credit.

Nature’s golden exclamation points of spring,

summer’s cooling canopy, a sunshield on a blazing day,

an umbrella in the rain,

the crisp smell of autumn crunching beneath feet.

But when the branches are stripped bare,

trunk and twig declare themselves

in bold plainspoken silhouettes

across winter’s blank white.

Beautiful and stark as words on a page.
